Sushmita Sen says she learnt table manners after winning Miss Universe, says ‘pet bhar ke kha ke jao ghar se’ at events
Winning the Crown Wasn’t the Only Learning Curve
Sushmita Sen, who brought home the first-ever Miss Universe title for India 29 years ago, recently shared a relatable and humorous anecdote on Curly Tales. While her victory etched her name in history, it wasn’t the only learning experience that came with the crown.
Facing a Hunger Challenge at an Official Dinner
Fresh-faced at 18, Sushmita candidly admitted that she hadn’t yet mastered the art of table manners before competing in Miss Universe. This became acutely evident at an official dinner in Mexico City following her win. Surrounded by dignitaries and barely speaking English, she found herself facing a seven-course meal with a rumbling stomach.
“I’m Starving, But How Do I Eat?”
As Sushmita recounted, “I’m 18 years old, I barely speak English. I’m getting it together at that point… I’m starving, I’m smiling at my travel manager saying ‘I’m very hungry’. Then I bend over like ‘I’m very hungry Barbara.'” Her travel manager’s response offered a practical solution: “So are they, and you’re the chief guest, you need to start.”
The Art of the Pre-Dinner Feast
The experience led Sushmita to a valuable lesson that transcended table etiquette. “I felt very out of place, and I don’t want to feel that again,” she stated. This sparked a personal rule: “Eat well at home and then go for an official dinner, so that you won’t feel the urge to eat there.” With a full stomach, she found it easier to gracefully decline extra servings and maintain composure.
Beyond the Pageant: Life Lessons and Legacy
Sushmita’s story goes beyond a funny anecdote. It highlights the unexpected challenges that can come with sudden success and the importance of adaptability and resourcefulness. Even the glamorous world of pageantry requires practical skills, and Sushmita’s approach offers a relatable and humorous perspective.
While Sushmita’s acting career has spanned decades, her Miss Universe victory remains a defining moment. This recent anecdote adds another layer to her multifaceted persona, showcasing her wit and ability to learn from life’s unexpected situations.
